Individual Note: was reared like the average boy in his neighborhood, having none ofthe advaantages of free schools and advanced methods of training. Buthe aquired considerable practical information from the few bookswithin his reach, and he had enough education to enable him totransact business intelligently, and to do his full share inadminisstering the public affairs of the locality, his ability andtrustworthiness being recognized to such an extent that he was calledupon frequently to preform public service. From his youth he wastrained to farm work, helping his father until nearly 23 years old, atwhich time his parents fave him a horse and buggy and turned over thecultivation of the 300 acre farm, which lies along the MahantangoCreek in Jordan Twonship. He had always been accustomed to handlinghorses and had alway owned one or more himself. After operating thehome place for 10 years he settled in the Schwabin Creek Valley in1863, and for serveral years farmed an eighty acre tract. In 1868 heaquired a tract of 101 acres at an assignees sale formerly owned byJohn Beissel, the Issac Kieffer then Adam Arnold. The log house heoccupied was build by Mr. Beissel in 1807 the date was discovered inthe west gable end when the house was being repainted in 1909. He wasalway successful in his farm work and at one time engaged in the saleof various farm immplements. All his life he had taken an activeinterest in local events. He was an interesting personality, and wasknown far and near. He was a Democrat and had taken part in itconuncils, frequently serving as delegate to county conventions, whichassembled in Sunbury. For nine succesive years he served as schooldirector of Upper Mahanoy Twonship, was overseer of the poor for fourterms supervisor one term and had held several precinct offices. Heand his family were prominent members of the Luthern congregation ofSt. John's Church in Upper Mahanoy Township, where he served fouryears as deacon, while in Jordan Township he served fouteen years insuccession as deacon, and two years as elder
