Buthe aquired considerable practical information from the few bookswithin his reach, and he had enough education to enable him totransact business intelligently, and to do his full share inadminisstering the public affairs of the locality, his ability andtrustworthiness being recognized to such an extent that he was calledupon frequently to preform public service. From his youth he wastrained to farm work, helping his father until nearly 23 years old, atwhich time his parents fave him a horse and buggy and turned over thecultivation of the 300 acre farm, which lies along the MahantangoCreek in Jordan Twonship. He had always been accustomed to handlinghorses and had alway owned one or more himself.
